Reflection
1. My project is a painting of two very different flowers but they are technically the same. On the left side, the flower is withered and dying. On the right side, it is very alive and bright in color. I used acrylic paint for this project and I stretched my own canvas. It took me a little under a month to complete this project. I started in late September while my teapot was in the firing stages and finished in mid to late October.
2. I think that a strong part of my project is the style of the text. I chose that style because it kind of had an old feel to it and I thought that it wouldn't be too overpowering for the painting. I think that the background was done well because it isn't too overpowering but it looks really good with both sides of the flower. I like how it is very "brushy" and I didn't try to blend it too much.
3. I think that I could have done a better job of making it more detailed and slowing down with my process. I think that I also could have planned it out better as far as techniques go. I painted the letters first which turned out to be a mistake because it was hard to do the background and I ended up doing the letters over again which was a waste of time.
4. The true meaning of my project is a reflection of the meaning of the song I designed my project after. The song that my paintings are revolved around is "Beautiful Things" by Gungor. The song basically states that God makes beautiful things out of ugly or unpleasant things. "You make me new" are some of the lyrics and that is basically stating that God cleanses and makes us a new creation. So that is why I did a dead flower (representing life before Christ) and a new flower (life with Christ).
5. Some elements that I used were space and color. I left a lot of space around the flower to emphasize the importance of the flower. I also used bright colors to draw the eye to the living part of the flower. I also used bright pink dots in between the words to emphasize the words and make people think of what the words actually meant.
6. The principles I used were contrast and balance. Contrast was a huge part in this painting since the two sides are very different but he are also very similar. Balance is also a huge part of this. It is somewhat balanced because there is a flower on either side but it is also asymmetrical because the living flower is much fuller than the dead one.
7. I learned that I get more frustrated more easily with my artwork than I realized. I got pretty frustrated with the petals not looking the way I wanted them to but I eventually liked them. I guess this could be applied to everday frustration. I just need to sit down and take a deep breath.
8. The first step in making my project was of course the preliminary drawings. I then made both of the canvases in a rushed frenzy. On the larger painting, I outlined the lettering and then painted the background. That was a HUGE mistake. After I painted the background, I re-painted the letters and added the flower. On the smaller canvas, I painted the background first and free-handed the text.
9. The project was overall pretty planned. I did however, do some of the smaller details (dots in between the words and bakcground of small painting) more by chance. I made some changes to the letters because of my issues with the background.
10. I didn't really like this project but I think it was just because I don't really like painting that much and I wasn't particullary pleased with how it turned out. Next month I will be doing a photo journal for the art trip to Seattle!
